Netflix Halloween Safari #12: Blue Sunshine

Blue Sunshine (1978) – just some folks hanging out, having a good time in a cabin in the woods. Nothing wrong with that, until Billy Crystal’s brother, Richard, rips off his wig to reveal his bald head, then stuffs a girl in the fireplace and goes after everyone else with an axe. Turns out, some bad acid went around in the 60′s and it’s got some killer time-release side effects such as headaches, nausea, drowsiness, and killing everyone you can get your hands on. One of the guys who dealt it is now a politician running for higher office and it’s up to real-life softcore porn baron, Zalman King, here playing a sensitive good guy, to expose his crimes and unravel this conspiracy of psychedelic baldies. Death in a discotheque and some genuinely tension-inducing attack sequences stud this quietly intelligent low budget flick that’s basically a hippie version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, playing off all the greatest hippie fears: bad acid, political conspiracies, growing up, selling out, and going bald.
